Exercise, Mobility, & Immobilization Devices Take Aways Flashcards
What does physical activity contribute to?
An individual’s physical & emotional wellbeing
What does inactivity & reduced activity impact
All body systems including cognition
Functional decline
The loss of the ability to perform self care or ADLS may result from illness, physical decondition, or adverse treatment effects
Daily recommended exercise
At least 5 hours of moderate-intensity
1 hour & 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week
What is disuse syndrome
Loss of function due to prolonged inactivity
Assisting with ambulation considerations
Apply safe patient handling techniques, ensures SPH devices & footwear are well fitted & in good condition, assess the environment, & fear of falling
Considerations before starting an exercise program for a patient
Ensure provider has cleared patient & has a reccommended heart rate zone
Passive ROM exercises
ROM exercises performed by the nurse for the patient who cannot do so themselves; muscle strength is not maintained, prevents contractures
Active ROM exercises
ROM exercises performed independently by the patient under nurse supervision
Prophylaxis for patient’s at risk of venous thromboembolism
Early ambulation
Sequential compression devices
compression stockings
Foot pumps
Ambulation purpose
maintains muscle tone, strength, joint flexibility, stimulates body systems, prevents DVT & paralytic ileus
Walker
top of walker is wrist level, elbows bent at 15 degrees
weaker leg first
do not use on stairs
Canes
grasp cane with unaffected hand
move cane 6-12 inches in front
Crutches
crutches should be 2 inches below axilla with elbows bent 20-30 degrees while holding hand grips at hip level
Weight is placed on hand grips
6 inches out besides & in front
four point gait
client’s can bear weight on both legs but require more stability
three point gait
Client who cannot bear weight on one leg
two point gait
client who bear weight on both legs, for stability, requires arm strength
swing to gait
Client can bear weight & have good arm strength
Swing through gait
For clients who can bear weight & have good arm strength, more experience
Gait belt use
used to help a patient ambulate to increase safety & decrease fall risk
rocking method
What is the purpose of immobilization devices?
Increase bone & joint stability
Support an extremity
Reduce load on weight bearing structures (hips, knees, ankles)
