Person Perception Flashcards
Person perception
The study of how we form and maintain impressions of others
‘Thin slicing’
Impressions are created with a very small glimpse of a person i.e. video of a teacher and their teaching style
What is true of impressions?
- They are made quickly and efficiently.
- They are resistant to change
- Other info is interpreted in line
What do we use when making impressions?
Physical cues, economical, informative
1 approach we use when integrating info into an impression
Normative: rational and logical, like the naive scientist
2 approach we use when integrating info into an impression
Cognitive: shortcuts when we don’t have time, like the cognitive miser
Anderson’s info integration theory
A weighted average of traits, which means new traits will decrease “score” of someone
What are the factors that affect our integration?
Primacy effects, priming, positive vs. negative information, internal cues
Perseverance effect
We believe in discredited theories (vaccines and autism)
Confirmatory hypothesis testing
Seeking confirming evidence
Self-fulfilling prophecy
Expectations cause something to become true i.e. a teacher’s expectations for a student cause the student to behave poorly
How accurate are our impressions?
More accurate with friends vs. strangers and less biased when we’re motivated to be right
Mind perception
Process by which people attribute human-like mental states to inanimate/animate objects, including other people
