Why do we value the past? - environmental life, personal development, education, skills, sense of place, quality of life, tourism, development.. However can’t cannot preserve everything

A

How do we choose? - national importance based on understand and appreciate.also quality of the thing. Does it have potential or is it rare? . If it is in good condition or has good aesthetics. Also cultural events.
The importance of setting - effects its loss. Legislation is site orientated. Values judgement.

A

What is being lost ? 23000 arch sites lost since 1945. 2% of all monuments are at high risk in the next three years. 28 are at medium risk. Popularity can cause this. Animals or footpath erosion.
Bodies responsible - historic England, historic environment Scotland.
90-95% of sites in Scotland are undesignated.

Owner requests to change to residential gets rejected everytime. Consent of it to close the entrance for safety is approved. It is a site of historical significance. Keeps changing proposals

Proposals to restore the castle by the new owners,Anta Estates, were announced in 1997 and received planning consent from Highland Council. This included the creation of a clan centre/museum, domestic apartments, and some public access. However,Historic Scotland Refused Scheduled Monument Consent; a decision upheld after a local public inquiry.
TheRoyal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, now part ofHistoric Environment Scotland, holds a substantial archive of research information, drawings, and photographs lodged by the current owners.
