Peripherial NS - Autonomic Flashcards
1
Q
The ANS controls what?
A
Vegetative, largely involuntary functions of the body
2
Q
The ANS controls what, specifically?
A
- smooth muscle of blood vessels, lens of eye, gut, bladder
- cardiac muscle
- glands
- Sympathetic and parasympathetic – most organs have both and they have opposite effects
3
Q
Sympathetic NS does what?
A
Mediates increased and rapid energy use
4
Q
How does the SNS mediate inreased and rapid energy use?
A
- increasing blood flow to skeletal muscles
- stimulates release of epinephrine which causes increased heart rate and increased blood sugar level
- sweat glands
- exit s.c. from thoracic and lumbar levels
- most synapse in the sympathetic ganglion outside s.c.
- most preganglionic neurons secrete Ach; postganglionic secrete norepinephrine
5
Q
What does the ParaNS do?
A
Mediates processes responsible for storage of energy
6
Q
Specifically, what is the PSNS responsible for?
A
- salivation
- gastric and intestinal motility
- secretion of digestive juices
- increased blood flow to gastrointestinal system
- exit s.c. from cervical and sacral levels
- neurons secrete Ach
