Cerebral cortex - divisions Flashcards
Cerebral cortex
Forms the outer surface of the cerebral hemisphere. All cell bodies form in cortex.
Cortex is convoluted by grooves called…
Sulci (small )/ Fissures (large)
- Allow for 3x greater surface area. 2/3 of cortex is in sulci
Bulges in cortex are termed, what?
Gyri or gyrus
What is the cortex composed of and what color appearance?
Composed of cells (largely unmyelinated), looks gray. Formed from 6 layers of cells
Cortex is divided into
4 lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal
Why are pathways white?
Because the axons are covered with myelin
Central fissure divides
the frontal from parietal lobe (pre/postcentral gyrus) and motor/ sensory cortex
Lateral fissure divides
temporal and frontal lobe
minor sulci define
the occipital lobe
Longitudinal fissure divides
the left and right hemispheres
