Peripheral Vascular System - Nordgren Flashcards
What is the purpose of the CV system?
- Maintain interstitial fluid homeostasis.
- Continually bring nutrients to, and remove waste from, each and every cell in the body
In what direction does blood flow?
From high pressure to low pressure.
-Pressure within various organs/tissue can be altered to regulate the flow of blood and specific needs
What does Fick’s Principle determine?
How substances are transported via blood between the capillary bed in one location to another
Capillaries are ___ exchange sites for ____ diffusion.
efficient, passive
What four things does diffusion depend on?
- Concentration difference
- Surface area for exchange
- Diffusion distance
- Permeability of capillary wall to the substance
What is hydrostatic pressure (P)?
Pressure of blood forcing fluid OUT of capillary
What is oncotic pressure (P)?
Osmotic attraction of water IN to regions of higher protein concentration (capillary)
Net fluid OUT of capillary (through pores) =
filtration
Net fluid INTO capillary =
reabsorption
What does Starlings Hypothesis describe?
Describes the relationship between opposing hydrostatic and oncotic forces on the net movement (Bulk Flow) of transcapillary fluid.
-Defined as either Filtration or Readsorption
