Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
What are the arterial pulses of the body?
Brachial Radial Femoral Popliteal Dorsal pedis- big toe Posterior tibial- inside ankle bone
What direction to veins move?
From feet to head to return deoxygenated blood to the heart
What systems propel the venous blood towards the heart?
Contraction of skeletal muscle
Pressure gradient due to breathing
Intraluminal valves that ensure unidirectional flow. (One way valves)
What are the parts of the peripheral vascular system?
Arteries
Lymphatic vessels
Veins
What does the lymphatic vessel drain into?
2 ducts:
Right lymphatic duct and the the thoracic duct.
What does the lymphatic vessel do?
Takes excess fluid from the tissue spaces and returns it to the heart
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
Absorbs lipids
Part of immune system
Conserves fluids and plasma proteins
Where are the most important lymph nodes located?
Cervical
Axillary
Epitrochlear
Inguinal
Subjective data about peripheral vascular complications
Leg cramps
Swelling
Lymph nodes enlargement
Skin changes in arms and legs
How does a Doppler ultrasonic stethoscope work?
Magnifies the sound of movement of blood through the heart and blood vessels.
What does a Doppler stethoscope detect?
- weak peripheral pulse
- infant and children BP
- measures low BP in adults
- measure BP in lower extremities
What assessment checks for deep vein thrombosis (blood clot)?
Wells score
Scored as low, moderate, high
For probability of DVT.
What are varicose veins?
Veins that have defective one way valves.
Causes pooling of blood and pressure build up.
Not a problem, but can be a sign of blockage in deeper veins causing deep vein thrombosis.
What vascular system is the Doppler used with?
Arterial blood vessels
What is arterial insufficiency?
A condition that slows it stops the flow of blood through your arteries.
- hard to palpate the pulse in lower extremities.
