Peripheral Vascular Disease Flashcards
What is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)?
-so normally oxygenated blood is being brought away from the heart and to the extremities by the arteries. But because of PAD, blood can’t get to the extremities (mainly the legs) due to plaque build up, it causes a narrow artery.
Can’t get blood to extremities then can’t get oxygen as well (cyanosis, poor tissue perfusion, weak pulses, cold touch, pale, gangrene)
Main issue of PAD?
Lack of blood supply
What is Peripheral Venous Disease (PVD)?
There is no trouble getting blood to the extremities. There is an issue with the vein, blood can’t get back up to the heart, which causes pooling of blood in the extremities (edema, warm legs due to a lot of blood, statsis dermatitis aka browning/yellowish bruising, stasis ulcers)
