About arteries
High pressure system delivers oxygenated blood to body systems
elastic fiber
muscle fibers
FUNCTION is to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues
Ischemia
deficient supply oxygenated blood to tissue
What do veins do
drain deoxygenated blood from tissues and return to heart
Venous return depends on pressure gradient caused by
- Breathing
- skeletal muscle contraction
- competent valves in veins
Lymphatic system
- separated vessel system
- without lymphatics = edema
Lymphatic system function
- conserve fluid and plasma that leaks out of capillaries
- absorbs lipids from the intestinal tract
Lymph flow propelled by
- Contracting skeletal muscle
- pressure change secondary to breathing
What are lymph nodes
Clumps of lymphatic tissue, bead-like at intervals along vessels
Arterial insufficiency Pain
Intermittent claudication to sharp, unrelenting constant
Arterial Insufficiency Pulses
Diminished or absent
Arterial insufficiency Skin characteristics
- dependent rubor
- dry, shiny skin
- loss of hair over toe
- nails thickened
Arterial insufficiency Ulcer characteristics
- tip of toes, toe web
- very painful
- deep
- circular
- pale black to dry and gangrene
Venous Insufficiency Pain
Aching, cramping
Intermittent claudication
cramping in the calves or thighs occurs with activity
Venous insufficiency pulses
Present but may be difficult to palpate through edema
Venous Insufficiency skin characteristics
- pigmentation in gaiter area
- skin thickened and tough
- may be reddish-blue in color
- frequently associated with dermatitisV
