Peripheral Neuropathy Flashcards
What are the 3 types of peripheral nerves?
- Motor - movement (skeletal muscle)
- Sensory - feeling/sensation
- Autonomic - Involuntary
(cardiac - smooth = organs, blood vessels, glands)
What is’Peripheral Neuropathy’?
Damage or disease to one or more peripheral nerve which
impairs movement & sensation to the U/E & L/E
Peripheral Neuropathy does NOT affect the spinal cord?
TRUE/FALSE?
TRUE!!
Only affects nerves of the periphery
What is the difference between “Mononeuropathy’ & ‘Polyneuropathy’?
MONONEUROPATHY:
1 nerve
eg) carpal tunnel syndrome
POLYNEUROPATHY:
Multiple nerves
eg) Guillian Barre Syndrome
Diabetes
***Signs & symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy & their source listed….
SIGN/SYMPTOM SOURCE
Pain = Sensory
Muscle Atrophy = Motor
Stocking glove sensation = Sensory
Altered heart rate = Autonomic
Impaired sweating = Autonomic
- Functional Implications*
- OTA/PTA role to assist client’s limitation….
PREVENT INJURY TO HANDS & FEET (CUTS, BURNS, BREAKS):
Education = skin care, footwear, & injury prevention
IMPROVE PROPRIOCEPTION & COORDINATION:
Gait training
Gait aid
Proprioception/balance training
PREVENT JOINT CONTRACTURES:
Education = positioning & splinting
ROM
Stretches
PAIN MANAGEMENT:
Modalities (ultrasound, heat/cold - if not contrained)
Work simplification
NUMBNESS:
Education: safety awareness
