Myasthenia Gravis Flashcards
What is ‘Myasthenia Gravis’?
A chronic autoimmune disease
Weakness &rapid fatigue of voluntary muscles
What is a ‘Neuromuscular Junction’?
Connects nervous system to muscular system
What is the role of ‘acetylcholine” at the neuromuscular junction?
Helps generate a muscle contraction
It binds to create the action potential needed for muscle contraction
What causes ‘Myasthenia Gravis’?
A breakdown of communication between nerves & muscles
It destroys the receptors in the muscle
What is Thymus Gland role in developing Myasthenia Gravis?
It gives incorrect instructions to the immune system
What sensory deficits occur in someone with Myasthenia Gravis?
None!!
Only motor deficits (weakness of eye, skeletal & respiratory muscles)
***OTA/PTA role to assist someone with Myasthenia Gravis….
ADL’s
Breathing exercises
Energy conservation techniques
