Peripheral Nerve lesion: pgs 19-22 Flashcards
What will happen if there’s a sensory loss with peripheral nerve lesion?
loss of all sensation (temperature, pain, touch proprioception), numbness of skin, and decreased or loss of deep tendon reflexes (if a nerve carries reflex)
What occurs if there is a motor loss with a peripheral LMN lesion?
Muscle weakness, flaccid muscle paralysis, muscle is denervated, loss of motor endplates, change in response to electrical stimulation, rapid muscle atrophy, decreased or loss of deep tendon reflexes.
What portions of the spinal cord make up the lumbar cistern?
L2-S2
T/F - During development, the vertebral column grows faster than the spinal cord.
True
What is the lumbar cistern?
An expanded portion of the subarachnoid space. It contains CSF, blood vessels, filum terminale and the cauda equina (nerve root that exits the column below the termination of the spinal cord).
If the CSF has a pink tint what does that mean?
Recent bleed - hemoglobin
if the CSF is yellow tint what does that mean?
Old bleed - bilirubin
If the CSF is cloudy what does that mean?
Increased white blood cells
What is it called when the muscles are innervated by the fibers of one spinal nerve?
Myotome
What is it called when the cutaneous area is innervated by the fibers of one spinal nerve?
Dermatome
Roots in the cauda equina give rise to lumbosacral plexi and pudendal and ______ splanchnic nerves.
Pelvic
___ and ___ ventral roots also contain preganglionic sympathetic fibers.
L2 and L3
___, ___, and ___ ventral roots also contain preganglionic parasympathetic fibers.
S2, S3, and S4
What would happen if there were damage to all the roots in cauda equina?
LMN paralysis and loss of sensation of lower limbs, loss of urinary bladder and bowel control.
