Peripheral Nerve Injuries of the Lumbosacral Plexus Flashcards
What are motor effects of femoral nerve injury?
quadriceps paralysis
weakness of knee
difficulty climbing up or down stairs
What are sensory effects of femoral nerve injury?
sensory loss to anterior & medial thigh, medial side of leg and medial border of the foot
What are motor effects of obturator nerve injury?
paralysis of all adductors (except hamstring of adductor magnus)
cross legging affected
What are sensory effects of obturator nerve injury?
insignificant sensory loss on medial side of the thigh, pelvic disease, ovarian tumours may cause pain on the medial thigh
What are motor effects of common fibular nerve injury?
foot extensors and evertors paralysed, foot is plantar flexed and inverted
What are sensory effects of common fibular nerve injury?
loss in the anterior and lateral side of the leg and dorsum of the foot
What are motor effects of tibial nerve injury?
hamstrings and all muscles of back of leg and sole of foot, foot in dorsiflexed and everted position
What are sensory effects of tibial nerve injury?
sole of foot
When may the whole sciatic nerve by affected?
pelvic fractures, hip joint dislocation/surgery, penetrating injuries
What are motor effects of whole sciatic nerve injury?
hamstrings and all muscle below the knee are paralysed, knee flexion affected, foot drop
What are sensory effects of whole sciatic nerve injury?
loss below the knee except on a narrow area on the medial side of the leg and foot
What is sciatica?
pain radiating from lower back into buttock, posterior
What is the cause of sciatica?
herniated lumbar intervertebral disc (L4/L5 or L5/S1)
What is often misdiagnosed as sciatica?
pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy
