Periodisation Flashcards
Define periodisation
Dividing the training year into specific sections for a specific purpose
Why is periodisation important
To ensure elite performers program their training year very carefully so they can improve performance and reduce chances of injury
What are the 3 phases of periodisation (longest to shortest)
Macro cycle
Meso cycle
Micro cycle
What is the macro cycle
The long term planning phase
What is the meso cycle
The 4-12 week period of training with a particular focus
What is the microcycle
Planning for a week/few days/individual training session
What are the stages of the macro cycle
The preparation period
The competition period
The transition period
Relate the phases of the macro cycle to a footballer
Prep = June - July
Comp = August - May
Transition = May - June
What does the preparation phase of the macro cycle involve
General conditioning and development of fitness levels
What does the competition phase of the macro cycle involve
Refining of skills and techniques as well as maintaining fitness levels
What does the transition phase of the macro cycle involve? What does this allow
Rest and recovery
Allowing the athlete to recharge physically and mentally
Define tapering
Reducing the volume and/or intensity of training prior to competition
Define peaking
Planning and organizing training so a performer peaks both physically and mentally for a major competition
Define double periodisation
An athlete needs to peak at 2 possible points during a training period
