periodisation Flashcards
what is periodisation?
dividing the training year into specific sections for specific purpose
what are the three training blocks?
1) macrocycle
2) mesocycle
3) microcycle
what is the macrocycle?
the big period involving a long-term performance goal made up of 3 distinct periods (e.g. a season long)
what are the three macrocycle periods?
1) preparation period
2) competition period
3) transition period
what is the preparation period?
involves general conditioning and the development of fitness levels
what is the competition period?
performer refines skills and techniques as well as maintaining fitness levels
what is the transition period?
rest and recovery stage allowing players to physically and mentally recharge and ensures an injury free start to the next season
what is the mesocycle?
4-12 week period of training with a particular focus such as a component of fitness
what is the microcycle?
one week or a few days of training that is repeated throughout the length of the mesocycle
what is tapering?
the reduction of volume or intensity of training prior to competition
usually occurs a few days beforehand
what is peaking?
planning and organising training so a performer is at their peak both physically and mentally for a major competition
what is double periodisation?
some sports require athletes to peak more than once in a season (e.g. long distance runners in winter and summer seasons) so periodisation has to occur twice
