Periodicity Flashcards
1
Q
How are elements in the periodic table arranged?
A
Increasing atomic number
2
Q
How do period 2 & 3 metals’ melting points change across the period and why?
A
Increase because the metallic bonds get stronger due to: incr number of delocalised e & decr ionic radius, which leads to a higher charge density
3
Q
Does more atoms in a molecule mean stronger or weaker intermolecular forces?
A
More atoms in a molecule means stronger intermolecular forces
4
Q
Do noble gases have the highest or lowest melting points?
A
Lowest because they exist as individual atoms (monatomic), resulting in very weak intermolecular forces
