Periodic Table Organization Flashcards
What are the three classes of elements?
metal, non-metals, and metalloids
what are properties of metals?
-on the left of “staircase”
-most are silver or grey in color and shiny
-malleable and ductile
-react strongly with other substances
most metals are solid at room temp. which metal is the exception? (liquid at room temp)
Mercury
what are properties of non-metals? which is element is the only non-metal that is liquid at room temp?
Bromine
-includes 17 elements
-on the right side of “staircase”
-vary in color
-reactivity varies
what are metalloids?
(the “staircase”)
-at the beginning of row 13 and down before row 17
-shares properties with both metals and non-metals
Where can you find the Alkali metals? what are their properties?
-row 1(vertical column farthest to the left)
-very reactive with halogens
-soluable in water
-shiny
Where can you find Alkali Earth Metals? What are their properties?
-group 2(vertical column on the right of alkali metals)
-less soluable in water than alkali metals
-shiny
-second most reactive (second to alkali metals)
Where can you find Halogens? What are their properties?
-row 17
-non-metals
-poisonous and react with alkali metals to form salts
Where can you find noble gases? What are their properties?
-Group 18
-non-metals
-unreactive
What are periods?
the name of the horizontal rows on the periodic table
what are groups?
the name of the vertical rows on the periodic table
