Acids & Bases Flashcards
Acid or Base: tastes sour
acid! bases taste bitter
Acid or Base: turns litmus blue
Base! Acids turn litmus red
Acid or Base: feels slippery
Base! Acids do not feel slippery
Acid or Base: reacts with metals
Acids! Bases do not react with metals
Acid or Base: conductive in solution
Both!
True or False: Bases place before 7 on the pH scale when acids place after 7
False! Acids place before 7 on the pH scale when bases place after 7
What are things that you can look for to help you identify acids?
-look for an H on the left side of the formula
-check if it’s aqueous
What is the process for naming acids?
use this key
-ide = hydro ic acid
-ate = ic acid
-ite = ous acid
hide a hicky
ate an icky
bite a delicious
What are organic acids
-COOH endings (polyatomic ions)
-H will be at the ending of the formula rather than at the beginning
-Rule: ate ic acid
What can help you identify a base?
The presence of OH- with a metal or an ammonium (NH4) ion usually indicates the substance is basic when in solution
Explain Neutralization Reactions
when acids and bases react their acidic and basic properties disappear and they produce neutral products
What is pH?
the pH of a solution is a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution and as such as a measure of the acidity or basicity of the solution
what are indicators?
determine whether a substance is an acid or base
