Atom Structure Flashcards
What are the 3 subatomic particles that make up each atom?
-protons (p+)
-neutrons (n)
-electrons (e-)
where does each of the 3 subatomic particles go on the atom?
-protons and neutrons make up the nucleus (make up the whole mass of the atom)
-electrons found along the outside of the nucleus (make up no mass of the atom)
In the structure of an atom, how many electrons can each level hold?
-the lowest level can hold 2 e-
-the second level can hold 8 e-
-the third level can hold 8 e- and so on
True or False: energy levels can be empty, partly filled, or completely filled
True!
What is the atomic #?
indicates the # of protons an atom has
What is the mass #?
integer equal to the total # of protons and neutrons
What is the atomic molar mass?
the average mass of the elements isotopes
what are isotopes?
atoms of the same elements can have different #’s of neutrons; the different possible versions of each element are called isotopes.
what are valence electrons?
Electrons in the outer energy level of the atom
What is the relationship between the group # and the # of valence electrons?
They always add up to the same #.
Ex: group 4 = a total of 4e-
What is the relationship between the period # and the # of energy levels?
They are the same —> the # of the period is the amount of energy levels
