Periodic Table of Elements | ST Flashcards
What three categories can elements on the periodic table be sorted into?
Metals, Nonmetals, & Metalloids
What are some properties of metals?
- Conductors of heat & electricity
- Ductile & Malleable
- Shiny
- Reacts with acids
- Solid at room temperature, all except mercury (Hg)
Where are metals located on the periodic table of elements?
To the left of the staircase
What are some properties of Nonmetals?
- Poor conductors of heat & electricity
- Liquid at room temperature
- Can easily be turned into powder when in the solid state
Where are nonmetals located on the periodic table of elements?
To the right of the staircase
Since Hydrogen (H) is a nonmetal, how come it is located to the left of the staircase?
Hydrogen (H) is located in group one on the left of the staircase because it contains one valance electron, similar to the alkali metals in group one.
What are some properties of metalloids?
- Has properties of both metals and nonmetals
- Used to make semi-conductors
Where are metalloids found on the periodic table of elements?
On the staircase
Name all of the metalloids:
- Boron
- Silicon
- Germanium
- Arsenic
- Antimony
- Tellurium
- Polonium
How is the periodic table of elements organized?
Periods & Columns
1 row/period = ?
1 row/period = energy level
What do columns/groups on the periodic table represent?
Elements that have the similar chemical behavior, in other words elements that have the same number of valence electrons and similar chemical properties.
What are the four chemical groups?
- Alkali metals
- Alkali earth metals
- Halogens
- Noble gases
