Atoms | ST Flashcards
What three particles make up an atom?
Electrons, Neutrons, & Protons
What is an electron?
A particle that gravitates around the nucleus and carries a negative charge.
Do electrons contribute to the mass of an atom?
No, electrons do not contribute to the atomic mass of an atom because they’re too light.
What is a proton?
A particle that is found inside the nucleus and carries a positive charge.
What is a neutron?
A particle found inside of the nucleus, it doesn’t carry a charge.
Do protons and neutrons contribute to the mass of an atom?
Yes, the mass of an atom consists of the mass of the nucleus, which is made up of protons & neutrons.
How can we determine the amount of protons/electrons an element has?
We can determine this by looking at the atomic number.
How do we determine the amount of neutrons an element has?
Subtract the relative atomic mass with the number of protons an element has.
What does AMU stand for?
Atomic Mass Unit
