Periodic Table Flashcards
Ionisation down a group
Decreases because electrons being removed further away from the nucleus, less strongly held.
Atomic radius across a period
Decreases because core charge increases causing electrons to be more strongly attracted to nucleus.
Atomic radius down a group
Increases because there are more shells occupied with electrons.
Electronegativity across a period
Because the core charge increases which causes the attraction between the bonding electrons and the nucleus to be stronger.
Electronegativity down a group
Decreases because the bonding electrons in the valence shell get further from the nucleus, the attraction is weaker.
Ionisation across a period
Increases because the core charge increases causing electrons to be held more strongly.
