Periodic Table Flashcards
What order are elements in, in the periodic table?
Increasing atomic no.
Where are metals and non-metals on the periodic table?
Metals are on the left, and non-metals to the right.
What is Group 1 of the Periodic Table?
Alkali metals.
What is inbetween alkali metals and non-metals in the Periodic Table?
Transition metals.
What is group 7 on the Periodic Table?
Halogens.
What is group 8/0 on the periodic table?
Noble gases.
What are groups
Elements with similar properties in columns.
What does the group number tell you in the periodic table?
How many electrons in the outer level (e.g. group 1 have 1 outer electron, group 7=7)
What does having the same number of outer electrons mean?
They have the same valency.
How can you predict the properties of elements in the same group if you know one?
Because they are similar. E.g. group 1 are all metals and react similar.
What are periods on the periodic table?
They are horizontal rows. A period represents another full energy level of electrons.
What is a valency?
Valency is the number of electrons an atom of an element uses to combine with others (i.e. form bonds)
How is the valency of an element ‘decided’?
It’s related to the number of electrons in its outer energy levels - so it’s related to group number too.
What valency do elements in group 1-4 have?
The same valency as their group number.
What valency do elements in group 5-7 have?
A valency equal to 8 minus their group number.
What valency do elements in group 0 have?
A valency of 0 - so they don’t form bonds with other elements.
