A
They are arranged in order of increasing atomic number.

What are periods?
A
Horizontal rows on the periodic table that indicate the electron shell an element is in.

What are groups?
A
Vertical columns on the periodic table that indicate how many valence electrons are in that element. Elements with similar chemical properties are in the same groups.
