Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What is a chemical bond?
An attraction between atoms that allows the formation of chemical substance.
What is an ionic bond?
the bonding between a non-metal and a metal, where one atom loses an electron to another atom. Resulting in a cation and an anion.
What is a Cation?
A cation is an ion with a positive charge as a result of losing an electron.
What is an Anion?
An anion is an ion with a negative charge as a result of gaining an electron.
What is a covalent bond?
Sharing a pair of valence electrons by two non-metal atoms. The molecule formed has no charge.
What is polar covalent bonding?
The sharing of a pair of valence electrons between two atoms in unequal. And the electron pair is displaced toward the more electronegative atom.
How do you name an ionic compound?
Add the suffix ‘ide’ to the end of the second element.
What are the prefixes used to name covalent compounds?
No prefix or mono (1)
di (2)
tri (3)
tetra (4)
pent (5)
hex (6)
hept (7)
oct (8)
non (9)
dec (10)
