Ions Flashcards
1
Q
When are atoms most stable?
A
Atoms are most stable when they have a full outer shell of electrons.
2
Q
What happens when an atom is unstable (unfilled outer shell)?
A
The atom gains or loses electrons to become stable (filled outer shell).
3
Q
What is the result of an unstable atom gaining or losing electrons?
A
The result is a charged particle (protons and neutrons are not equal) known as an ion. This imbalance means the ion is charged this is known as its valency.
