Periodic Table Flashcards
0
Q
Period
A
A set of elements sharing the same number of electron shells, shown as rows on the periodic table
1
Q
Periodic Table
A
A systematic arrangement of the elements in order of increasing atomic number
2
Q
Group
A
A column of elements that have similar electron configurations, properties, and valencies
3
Q
Atomic Number
A
the number of protons in the nucleus; indicates which substance it is
4
Q
Metals
A
The largest class of elements (over 3/4) Properties: Mostly shiny, solid at room temperature, have high melting points, conduct electricity, and form cations
5
Q
Non-metals
A
A class of elements that form anions. Usually non-shiny solids or gases, with low melting and boiling points Examples: hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine
6
Q
Semi-metals
A
A class of elements which share some of the properties of metals and non-metals
Also called metalloids or semi-conductors
Examples:
Silicon, boron
7
Q
Reactivity Series
A
A list of metals arranged in order of how easily they react with other substances
