Acids & Bases Flashcards
corrosive
describes a substance, usually a strong acid, that burns away skin or the surface of an object
acid
a compound that contains hydrogen and dissolves in water to produce hydrogen ions
base
a substance that can accept the hydrogen ions of an acid, and is the chemical opposite of an acid
alkali
a base that is dissolved in water
caustic
describes a strongly alkaline substance that can burn or corrode
pH
Power of Hydrogen
a measure of the concentration of hydrogen in a solution
the strength of an acid or base expressed as a number on a scale from 0 (strongly acidic/greatest concentration of hydrogen ions) to 14 (strongly alkaline)
indicator
a substance that changes color in the presence of an acid or alkali and is used to distinguish between them
neutralization
a reaction where one substance fully or partially cancels out the properties of another
