Periodic Table Flashcards
a chart that organizes information about all the known elements according to their properties
Periodic Table
a code, usually made up of one or two letters, used to represent an element
Chemical Symbol
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; used to identify an element
Atomic Number
a measure of an atom’s mass that is equal to the number of protons and neutrons in the atom’s nucleus
Atomic Mass
a horizontal row in the periodic table
Period
a vertical column in the periodic table; also called a chemical family
Group
a group of chemical symbols and numbers that shows the number of atoms of each element in a molecule.
Chemical Formula
An element that conducts heat and electricity well, is shiny, and can be hammered into sheets or drawn into wires
Metal
an element that does not conduct heat or electricity well and is dull and brittle or gaseous
Non Metal
an element that has some properties of both metals and nonmetals
Metalloid
one of six elemental gasses that does not naturally react with other element; Group 18 in the periodic table
Noble Gases
the tendency of a substance to undergo chemical changes
