Periodic Table Flashcards
What does the periodic table contain?
Periods
Groups
Define periods
The rows within the periodic table.
Number of electron shells.
Define groups
Columns within the periodic table.
Number of electrons in the outer most (valence) electron shell.
What are 2/3 of elements?
2/3 of elements are metallic, but they can be less common.
Metal properties
Solid at room temperature
High melting and boiling points
High density
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Lustrous (shiny)
Malleable (bendable/reshape)
Ductile (can be pulled into wires)
Common metals
Aluminium
Magnesium
Mercury
Lead
Iron
Copper
Gold
Silver
Titanium
What are alloys?
Alloys are mixtures of metals such as bronze, steel, solder, electram
Where are metal elements located on the periodic table?
Left-hand side of the periodic table except hydrogen.
What elements are not as numerous but more abundant?
Non-metals
Where are non-metals located on the periodic table?
Found on the right-side of the periodic table and hydrogen
Non-metal properties
Opposite to metal properties
Dull
Typically liquids or gas at room temperature
Low melting and boiling points
Low density with exceptions
Insulators - low conductivity of heat and electricity
Brittle - cannot be bent
Metalloid properties
Have properties from both metals and non-metals
Atomic symbol and its properties
The simple way to represent elements.
Always start with a capital letter
Second letter is always lowercase
1 or 2 letters
Elemental name derivation
Names are historical, named after people, places, myths
Does non-metals gain or lose electrons?
Gain
Do metals gain or lose electrons?
Lose
