Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What happens during a chemical reaction?
Old bonds break and new bonds are produced
Atoms exchange electrons with each other during chemical reactions, which can involve new configurations of atoms.
What are the 4 major types of reactions?
- Acid-base
- Combustion
- Corrosion
- Reactions of life
What reaction is photsynthesis?
Reaction of life
What reaction is respiration?
Reaction of life
Define corrosion
The oxidation of metals.
Rusting is the corrosion of iron and steel.
Occurs faster in marine environments.
In an acid-base chemical reaction, what happens?
Both the acid and base mixed will neutralise.
Neutralisation reactions produce H2O and asalt.
How do you write chemical reactions?
Reactants -> Products
E.g.
Photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide + water -> (light) oxygen + glucose
Chemical formula:
CO2 + H2O ->(light) C6H1206
What is combustion?
An oxidation exothermic reaction
Combustion requires what 3 things
- Oxygen
- Fuel
3.heat
Common fuels:
Fossils fuels
Wood
Sugar/carbohydrates
Fats/oils/lipids
Define photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water.
Plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose.
Define respiration
process in living organisms involving the production of energy
Glucose reacted with oxygen in cells to produce energy, which keeps cells alive
Define corrosion
The oxidation of metals. Rusting is the corrosion of iron and steel.
Occurs faster in marine environments.
Define acid-bases reaction
Neutralisation reactions produce water and a salt
