Atoms Flashcards
Subatomic particles which make up atoms
Incredibly small
Make up everything
Atoms are made up of:
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
Define proton (+)
A small, positively charged particle of matter found in the atom of all elements.
Slightly smaller than neutron.
Define neutron (o)
An uncharged elementary particle
Has a mass nearly equal to that of the proton
Is present in all known atomic nuclei except the hydrogen nucleus.
Slightly larger than proton.
Define electron (-)
An elementary particle that has a negative charge of electricity.
Travels around the nucleus of an atom.
About 1000 times smaller than protons.
How do atoms become ions?
When an atom gains or loses electrons.
Define ions
When atoms gain or lose electrons, they become ions. These are how chemical reactions occur.
Define atom
An atom is defined as the smallest unit of matter invisible by chemical means.
A fundamental building block of chemical elements.
Atoms make up everything and are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons.
How to determine number of electrons in atom?
of electron
# of proton = # of electron
Positively charged ion = # of proton - # of lost electron
Negatively charged ion = # of proton + # of gained electrons
