periodic table Flashcards
what are atoms
Atoms are made of subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, & electrons. In an atom’s dense nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons. Electrons surround the nucleus in energy levels of the electron cloud.
what is an atomic number ?
The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom. The number of protons determines the element, so the number of protons in an atom of an element does not change.
a negatively charged particle found orbiting the nucleus of an atom
electrons
a particle carrying no electric charge and forming part of the nucleus of an atom
neutron
valance elctrons
if the group number is below 10 that is the # of valance and if over 10 subtract 10
why are colomns so important
Elements in the same column have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell called Valence Electrons
