Justinian
Byzantine Empire in the 6th century responsible for both codifying the old Roman Laws (Justinian’s Code), which governed the empire for the next 900 years, and building the Hagia Sophia
Muhammad
Founder of Islam. Religious, political, and military leader from Mecca who unified Arabia into a single religious polity.
Genghis (Chinggis) Khan
Founder and Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. He came to power by uniting the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia, and his empire became the largest contiguous empire in history after his death. The empire also stabilized the Silk Road and facilitated trade along it.
Kublai Khan
Grandson of Genghis Khan; Conquered China and created the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty there.
Marco Polo
Venetian explorer and merchant who traveled to the Yuan dynasty in China. He was hosted by Kublai Khan at the Imperial Palace and traveled throughout much of Asia.
Saladin
Muslim general and sultan of Egypt who defeated the European Crusaders in the Third European Crusade (the King’s Crusade).
Mansa Musa
King of Mali famous for his Hajj journey. During the trip, he stopped and gave out gifts in many cities (like Cairo), which ruined the local economies for years.
Ibn Battuta
Moroccan explorer known for his extensive travels throughout Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia. Accounts of his journey were published in the Rihla.
Ibn Sina
Muslim philosopher who wrote many works based on both Islamic/Hellenistic philosophy and medicine. His work “The Canon of Medicine” became the standard medical text at many medieval universities.
Zheng He
Chinese court eunuch, mariner, explorer, diplomat, and fleet admiral, who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa during the early Ming dynasty.his voyages were meant to reestablish Chinese dominance in Indian Ocean trade.
Pachacuti Inca
Considered to be the founder of the Incan empire in South America. He took small tribes and united into one large empire during the late 15th century.
Thomas Aquinas
Italian Dominican priest and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism; wrote the Summa Theologica.
