Hammurabi
Mesopotamian king responsible for creating the world’s first written legal code (the Code of Hammurabi). This code promoted the idea of justice (eye for an eye), but treated the social classes differently.
Abraham
Considered to be the father of the Hebrew people and of Judaism. He is also seen as a prophet in both Christianity and Islam.
Moses
Founder of Judaism. Helped lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and received the Ten Commandments while praying on Mount Sinai.
Buddha
Siddhartha Gautama was born as a prince in India. He is the creator of Buddhism, a religion based on the idea of self denial. Taught his followers the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
Confucius
During the Warring Stated period in China, he founded a belief system that emphasized traditional values such as obedience, filial piety, respect for elders, and order.
Darius
Persian king who built the Royal Road to connect his empire. He created a strong central government and controlled the different regions of the empire through satraps (governors) and spies.
Archimedes
Greek mathematician who studied density, levers, and pulleys, and invented a screw pump device.
Pythagoras
Greek mathematician considered to be the “father of geometry”. Famous for developing the Pythagorean Theorem
Eratosthenes
Greek geographer who showed that the Earth was round and calculated the size of its circumference.
Socrates
Greek philosopher responsible for creating a method of teaching using a questions and answer mode, encouraged students to examine their beliefs
Aristotle
Greek philosopher responsible for inventing a method of arguing according to the rules of logic. He founded a school called the Lyceum.
Alexander the Great
Macedonian king who created a large empire that included Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia. Helped bring about the Hellenistic culture.
Shi Huang Di/Qin Shihuangdi
Chinese emperor who unified China and favored a policy of Legalism to govern the people.
Asoka
Mauryan ruler of India - converted to Buddhism after the Battle of Kalinga.
Jesus of Nazareth
He was born a Jew and a Roman subject. He is considered to be the founder of the Christian faith.
