What is the management of perineal tears?

A

1st degree: analgesia, no repair required unless bleeding.

2nd + 3rd degree: analgesia and dissolvable sutures

4th degree:

  • OT repair = better outcomes.
  • antibiotic prophylaxis
  • physiotherapy and pelvic floor exercises
  • OnG review 6-12 weeks post partum.

Incision made through the perineum to enlarge the diameter of the vulval outlet. Done in the second stage of labor.

Midline/Mediolateral.

Mediolateral = favorable.
