Perinatal, neonatal, infant + childhood mortality Flashcards
Define miscarriage.
pregnancy loss <24 weeks
Define stillbirth.
baby born >24/40 weeks showing no signs of life
Define neonatal death; state the difference between early and late neonatal death.
baby born alive but dies in the first 28 days
early = 0-7 days
late = 7-28 days
Define infant death.
death within the first year of life
Define postneonatal infant death.
death from 28 days - 1 year
Define child death
some say 1-5 years
others say 1-15 years
Define stillbirth rates.
number of stillbirths for each 1000 total births
Define perinatal mortality rate.
number of stillbirths + neonatal deaths per 1000 total births
Define neonatal mortality rate.
number of neonatal deaths per 1000 live births
Define infant mortality rate.
number of infant deaths for each 1000 live births
Define under 5 mortality rate.
probability of dying between birth and 5 years of age
What are the top 3 causes of stillbirths?
- remaining antepartum deaths (unexplained)
- asphyxia, anoxia or trauma
- congenital anomalies
What are the top 3 causes of perinatal mortality?
- immaturity related conditions
- congenital anomalies
- asphyxia, anoxia or trauma
What are the top 3 causes of neonatal mortality?
- immaturity related conditions
- congenital anomalies
- asphyxia, anoxia or trauma
What are the top 3 causes of postneonatal mortality?
- congenital anomalies
- other conditions
- immaturity related conditions
What are the top 3 causes of child mortality?
- neoplasms/cancers
- diseases of nervous system
- external causes of morbidity + mortality
What are the main causes of death under 5 years of age?
- preterm birth complications
- pneumonia
- intrapartum related events
- diarrhoea
