Perimeter, area and volume Flashcards
Explain in words what the perimeter of a shape is?
Mathematically what operation are we using to find the perimeter?
It is the distance around a shape ie. it is the sum of all the lenghts of the sides of the shape.
Remember mathematically you are always adding lengths.
Area is the amount of space within side a shape.
Mathematically what operation are we using to find the area of a shape?
Mathematically we are multiplying the sides (generally 2 sides) to find the area.
What is the formula for the area of a rectangle?
Area of a rectangle =length x breath (or height)
What is the formula for the area of a square?
Because a square has four equal sides the formula becomes
A = l x l = l2
What are examples of units for area?
Extention: one hectare (ha) = ? m2
mm2
cm2
m2
Km2
One hectare = 10 000m2
What mathematical operation do you use to find the side a square if you are given its area?
Take the square root of its area.
Eg what is the side of a square if its area = 81cm2
l2 = 81
l =√81
l = 9cm
What is the formula for the are of a traingle?
Area = 1/2 base x height
= 1/2 bh
Hint: the area is always 1/2 that of rectangle
What is the area of parallelogram?
Area = base x perpendicular height
A = bh
When doing area problems and a drawing is not provided always….
always draw a diagram and label the drawing with information form the question.
What are the units for
- perimeter …..
- area …………..
- Volume ……….
Perimeter are mm, cm, m , km
Area are mm2, cm2, m2, km2
volume are mm3, cm3, m3, km3
Can you see the difference?
The formula for the volume of a rectangular prism is ….
v =length x breath x height
V = lbh
What are we talking about when we use the word Capacity?
what is the basic unit for capacity?
it is another word for volume of liquids?
the basic unit is the litre (L)
1000mL =
1000 L =
1000 kL =
1000mL = 1 L
1000L = 1 kL (kilolitre)
1000kL = 1ML (megalitre)
1 megalitre = 1 000 000L
How are capacity of liquids and volume of solids linked
1 mL = ….cm3
1L = …….cm3
1 m3 = ….kL
what does cc stand for?
1mL = 1 cm3
1L = 1000cm3
1m3 = 1kL
cc stands for cubic centimetre
