Tip: Always remember to simplify your answer when using fractions.

Eg. What is 8/24 in its simplest form.

Hint: what number goes into both 8 and 24

A

Definition: A proper fraction is in its simplest form when it’s numerator and denominator are as small as possible.

8/24 (8 goes into both the top and bottom) = 1/3

Q

What are Equivalent fractions?

A

Equivalent fractions have the same value and they represent the same number but they have different numerators and denominators.

Eg. 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 all have the same value and can be simplified to 1/3

Q

What is the rule for finding equivalent fractions?

Eg 3/6 = 1/_ And 3/5 = _\35

Hint: Ask yourself ‘how has the 3 turn into a 1’

“how has the 5 turned into 35”

A

Multiply or divide both top and bottom by the same number.

3/6 = 1/3 ( divide by 3).

3/5 = 21/35 ( times by 7)

Q

Comparing fractions: what is the rule for comparing fractions?

Eg use > or > to complete the question.

Q: 1/3 _ 3/10

A

To compare fractions the denominator has to be the same ( ie. equivalent fractions)

Step 1: Find the LCM of 3 and 10 Failsafe:easiest way is to multiple both denominators together 3 x10 =30

Then 1/3 becomes 10/30 and 3/10 becomes 9/30

1/3 > 3/10
