Fractions Flashcards
What is 3/4 as a decimal and a percentage?
0.75 and 75%
What is a 1/3 as a decimal and a percentage?
O.33 or 33.3%
What is 2/3 as a decimal and a percentage?
0.67 or 66.67%
Tip: Always remember to simplify your answer when using fractions.
Eg. What is 8/24 in its simplest form.
Hint: what number goes into both 8 and 24
Definition: A proper fraction is in its simplest form when it’s numerator and denominator are as small as possible.
8/24 (8 goes into both the top and bottom) = 1/3
What are Equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions have the same value and they represent the same number but they have different numerators and denominators.
Eg. 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 all have the same value and can be simplified to 1/3
What is the rule for finding equivalent fractions?
Eg 3/6 = 1/_ And 3/5 = _\35
Hint: Ask yourself ‘how has the 3 turn into a 1’
“how has the 5 turned into 35”
Multiply or divide both top and bottom by the same number.
3/6 = 1/3 ( divide by 3).
3/5 = 21/35 ( times by 7)
What is 1/4 as a decimal and a percentage?
0.25 and 25%
What does < and > mean ?
> means greater than
< means less than
Eg. 1/2 > 1/4
Tip:always read from left to right
1/2 is greater than 1/4
Comparing fractions: what is the rule for comparing fractions?
Eg use > or > to complete the question.
Q: 1/3 _ 3/10
To compare fractions the denominator has to be the same ( ie. equivalent fractions)
Step 1: Find the LCM of 3 and 10 Failsafe:easiest way is to multiple both denominators together 3 x10 =30
Then 1/3 becomes 10/30 and 3/10 becomes 9/30
1/3 > 3/10
when adding/subtracting fractions with different denominators use the cross method.
When adding/subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
Add/subtract the numerators, the denomiator doesn’t change.
what is the rule when multiplying fractions.
multiple the top number and then multiple the bottom numbers.
What is the rule when dividing by fractions
turn the divide sign into a muliplication by
- invert the second fraction
- then multiple the two fractions
Turning fractions into decimals
method 1 - equivalent fractions
turn fractions into 10’s or 100’s
Turning fractions into decimals
method 2 - division
if method 1 doesn’t work, divide the bottom number into the top number
