What is the pericardial cavity?
A
Space between visceral, parietal layer, normally filled with 15-20 ml of plasma filtrate

What are causes of pericardial disease
A
Usually infections, mostly viral; but bacterial and fungal can occur. Other causes could include:
- Dresslers syndrome
- Trauma
- Drugs/toxins
- metabolic disease or any disease that affects connective tissue
- Immune mediated disorders

What is Dresslers syndrome?
A
A type of pericarditis or inflammation of the sac around the heart. Occurs after damage to the heart/pericardium
- Causes an immune system response to damage the heart or percardium, such as from heart attack, surgery, or traumatic event

How are pericardial diseases usually diagnosed?
A
Echocardiograms or CxRs
- ECGs can be used alternatively but won’t be definitive
