Performance enhancement of the Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
What are carbohydrates?
They are the major fuel required for anaerobic and aerobic activities. The body can only store certain amount in the liver and muscles therefore it is important for an athlete to make sure they consume enough carbohydrates to maintain energy production.
What is a Gylcaemic Index (GI)?
A ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0-100 according to the extent to which they raise blood glucose levels after eating.
What is Carbohydrate loading?
Is a method typically used by endurance athletes competing in events lasting longer than 90mins (marathons, triathons), to maximise carbohydrate stores in the muscle and liver.
What is creatine?
Creatine creates “quick burst” energy and increased strength, which improves your performance without affecting your ability to exercise for longer periods (aerobic endurance).
What is Protein?
Protein is a nutritional supplement used by many athletes to aid in the growth and repair of muscle tissue and cells. This leads to a greater storage or fuels and an ability to produce strength and power.
What is Calcium?
Calcium makes up much of the structure of bones and teeth and allows normal bodily movement by keeping tissue rigid, strong, and flexible.
What are Anabolic Steroids?
Synthetically produced drugs that mimic the effect of the normal testosterone. The anabolic effect promotes bone density, muscle growth, and rapid recovery, form injury leading to an increase in strength and power.
