Perek 1 review Flashcards
What were the names of Elkanah’s 2 wives?
Chana and Penina.
How many kids did they have?
Chana was childless, Penina had 10
What did Penina do to Chana?
Penina would tease her that she has no children.
Why did Penina tease Chana?
She does this leshem shamayim, to get Chana to daven for children more kavanah.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t the right thing to do, and she was later punished.
Why did Elkana travel to Shilo?
Every year, Elkanah traveled to the Mishkan in Shilo for the shalosh regalim.
Why did he take a different route each year?
It’s a mitzvah to go to the Mishkan/ Mikdash for the shalosh regalim, but many people
neglected the mitzvah. Elkanah would travel a different way to Shilo each time, and he would
teach people of the mitzvah of aliyah leregel.
How did Elkana divide the portions of meat from his korbanos?
He gave Penina and her children one portion each. He gave Chana a double portion

A child
What did she say she would do with this child?
She will dedicate him to Hashem. She will also take a vow that he will be a nazir (like
Shimshon).
What are 3 halachos of tefillah we learn from Chana?
- She davened with kavanah, and we should too. 2. She pronounced all of the words (she didn’t
just think them to herself). 3. She said the words quietly, not out loud (how we should say
Shemoneh Esrei.
Who was Eli (ay‐lee)?
Eyli was the Kohen Gadol. He descended from Isamar, the son of Aharon. On that day, he was
also appointed as the shofet, and leader of Bnei Yisroel.
What did Eli see and how did he misjudge the situation?
He sees Chana davening quietly, and doesn’t realize she is davening, since at that time it
wasn’t normal to daven quietly. He sees her lips moving quietly, but no sound is coming out,
and he thinks that she is drunk.
How did Eli misunderstand the Urim veTumim?
Eli asked the Urim V’tumim about her, and the letters
“hay, kaf, reish, shin” lit up. He thought it spelled shikorah that she’s drunk. Really it said k’Sarah. She is childless, like Sarah, and
is davening to Hashem.
What did Chana explain to Eli?
She answers that she is not drunk, just broken hearted and davening fervently.
How did Eli respond?
He realizes his mistake, and he gives her a bracha to have a son. From here we learn if you accuse someone you must give them a beracha.
