Perceptual Sets Slide Flashcards
What is Perception?
ability/process to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses
What is a Perceptual Set?
A predisposition or temporary readiness to perceive certain objects while ignoring others
Why are perceptual sets important?
- Sets have a wide range of functions
- Affected by motivation, emotion, past experience, and expectations
- Make perception more efficient by reducing the choice between alternatives
- Make any choice quicker than considering all the alternatives
What are the four factors that affect a Perceptual Set
Emotions, motivation, expectations, experiences
Motivation
want to fulfil basic urges/needs or developed goals.
Emotions
emotions can have a dramatic impact on how we perceive the world around us.
Experience
our past experiences have a great impact on our perceptual sets. Example: If you were attacked by a dog as a child, your mind will be alert when you go to a park where there are dogs
Expectations
If we expect people to behave in certain ways in certain situations, these expectations can influence how we perceive these people and their roles.
Rorschach / Inkblot test
psychological test where subjects are shown a series of inkblots and their perception of each image is recorded and interpreted using psychological methods and complex algorithms
Examination or study of the active pattern of perceiving objects, shapes, or scenery as meaningful things to the observer’s experience
Who created the inkbot test
created Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorschach.
