Cognitive Psychology Flashcards
Cognitive Psychology
Cognitive psychology is the study and application of
how the brain learns
Who is Albert Bandura
Born in Mundare, Alberta, a small town of roughly four hundred inhabitants
Youngest child, and only son, in a family of six
The limitations of education in a remote town such as this caused Bandura to become independent and self-motivated in terms of learning, and these primarily developed traits proved very helpful in his lengthy career
Elected president of the American Psychological Association
In 2014, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada “for his foundational contributions to social psychology, notably for uncovering the influence of observation on human learning and aggression”
What do humans do when they Observe behaviour?
either acceptable or unacceptable – they are more likely to model it
Learning is largely through__
Social interaction
also includes the motivation of rewards
Who conducted the Bobo doll experiment (1961-1963)
Albert Bandura
What did the Bobo doll experiments show us
Experiments showed that people not only learn by being rewarded or punished (behaviourism), but they can also learn from watching somebody else being rewarded or punished (observational learning).
Results
Children who observed the aggressive model made far more imitative aggressive responses than those who were in the non-aggressive groups.
The girls in the aggressive model condition also showed more physical aggressive responses if the model was male, but more verbal aggressive responses if the model was female.
Boys imitated more physically aggressive acts than girls.
