Perceptual Set Flashcards
Context
Focus on aspects of a setting that are immediately accurate. Makes a quick and accurate interpretation of what we are looking at.
eg. Misinterpret a round red object as a fruit.
Motivation
Visual perception can be influenced by our motives when we see what we want, rather than what is actually there.
eg. If we are hungry we may interpret some images as food.
Emotional
Interpret information is a certain way, depending on what mood we are in. Refers to how we are feeling.
eg. If we are feeling happy, we may interpret other people’s actions or facial expressions as ‘happiness.’
Past experiences
Interprets new stimuli in the same way we have in the past. Refers to our personal experiences.
eg. expose to red stop signs, perceive future red signs to make us ‘stop’ or halt.’
Culture
Way of life of a particular group/community that is different from others. Experiences with/in a particular culture can influence the way we interpret/process visual information.
eg. If not using hand gestures in our own culture is uncommon, we may be more likely to think others gestures as aggression or extreme excitement.
