Functions of the eye Flashcards
Cornea
Light enters the eye through the cornea, a transparent covering which protects the eye. The light rays focus on the retina with the corneas help.
Aqueous Humour.
Light passes through the aqueous humour, which is a watery fluid found between the cornea and pupil. It also helps maintain the shape of the eye as well as providing nutrients and oxygen. And carries away waste products.
Pupil
Opening in the middle of the Iris. Expands and contracts the amount of light entering the eye.
Iris
Controls the size of the pupil. Regulates the size of the pupil by expanding and contracting the pupil.
Lens
A transparent flexible structure located behind the pupil, which focuses light on the retina. It adjusts its shape according to the distance of an object. Bulges nearby and flattens far
Ciliary Muscles
Attached to either side of the lens, helps the lens change its shape. Automatically contracts or relaxes to change the lens so it can focus light images of objects are varying distances.
Vitreous Humour
Clear jelly-like substance, which helps maintain the shape of the eyeball and focuses light.
Retina
Layer of photoreceptors at the back of the eye, it receives and absorbs light and processes images.
Fovea
Small cup-shaped area in the middle of the retina that contains only cones. Cones vision is sharpest when lens focus light images on the fovea.
Optic Nerve
Neural pathway, sends messages to the brain.
Blind spot; no photoreceptors = no visual information.
