Perceptual Development Flashcards
Development of perception Innate or learned? Nature or nurture? Slater, Gibson, Piaget
Define the visual world
Complex environment that needs to be organised and interpreted to understand it.
Perceptual development?
The process by which we begin to mentally sort information, recognising objects and their different properties, detecting patterns and filling in missing info.
Are infants born with almost all of the neurons they will ever have?
Yes
Babies have fewer inborn behaviour patterns, what does this mean for their learning?
Open to learning from their environment.
What is plasticity?
Ability of an immature brain to change in both form and function.
Important for growth & development
Describe both ways in which development occurs.
Experience-expectant - when our brain expect certain event to happen
Experience-dependent - in response to specific learning.
Mirror neurons?
Neurons that fire both when an individual acts and observes the same action performed by another. (contagious yawning)
Sensory perception is governed by what?…
The 5 senses
Sight Hearing Smell Touch Taste
Cross-modal perception?
The capacity to detect correspondences of different features in the world from different sensory modalities. (clapping of hands - requires vision & sound)
Perceptual-motor development?
Refers to child’s developing ability to interact with the environment, combining use of the senses and motor skills.
What do perceptual motor skills include?
Bodily awareness
Spacial awareness
Directional awareness
Temporal awareness
Piaget stages of cognitive development
Sensori-motor
Pre-operational
Concrete operational
Formal operational
Object permanence
The ability to understand that objects exist even if they cannot directly be sensed
