Perception Flashcards
What is the only organ in the body completely encased in bone?
The brain
When does our sensory education begin?
before birth!
What helps build our experiences?
Information from the world or sensations
What are sensations?
The elementary parts of the environment that the brain uses to create meaning
What is the raw material for perception?
Sensation
What is perception?
The processing of stimuli to create a sensory understanding of the world
Bottom-Up processing
what our senses can detect - integrates into brain.
Top-Down processing
use integrated info (becomes experience/back ground knowledge) and expectations to interpret what we see
Laws of Gestalt/Gestalt principles of organization (5)
- Proximity
- similarity
- closure
- good continuation
- common fate
Principle of Proximity
objects that are close to one another will be grouped together.
Principle of similarity
objects that are physically similar to one another will be grouped together.
principle of closure
people tend to perceive whole objects even when part of that information is missing.
principle of good continuation
if lines cross each other or are interrupted, people tend to still see continuously flowing lines.
principle of common fate
states that objects that are moving together will be grouped together.
