Perception. Flashcards
Perception
Perception is a mental process which the brain gives meaning to the information it is receiving via the senses.
Stimulus features that affect perception:
Familiarity of stimulus - when a performer becomes familiar with a stimulus perception levels are likely to increase - Expectation
Speed: The speed of the stimulus can affect a performer’s perception - Short and long term responses. E.g speed of a football coming towards the goalkeeper.
Loudness - The stronger the visual display or louder the sound, the more likely a performer is to respond quickly. Focus and attention. E.g sound of a buzzer in swimming race start
Individual factors that impact perception:
Attention level - This involves focusing certain stimuli at the expense of others.
Arousal level - When perception levels are heightened, this is likely to impact on arousal ( state of preparedness of the body for action) e.g fighting an opponent in boxing, if arousal level is too low, you won’t win.
Attention capacity - This can be learned for specific sports that include certain stimuli on which the performer should concentrate - Shift in focus or perception
