What is perception ?
It is an interpretation and an active process
Factors that influence this:
Context , culture, language
What is the perceptual set ?
A set of internal factors which influence what we select and pay attention to
External factors ?
Also influence the way we perceive things eg size, contrast, degree of motion
Proximity
When we see things closer together we think of them as a group
Law of conformity
We perceive items that have a continuous form as making a pattern
Perceptual distortions ?
Are the errors that people make in their perception of others and events
Contrast effect ?
People compare people against each other
Horns/halo
People tend to focus on either one positive or one negative aspect of a person and use that to evaluate the person as a whole
Sterotyping
People tend to assign a set of characteristics to a group of people
Prejudice
People holding a negative or positive impression of members of a group
eg. Nazis and jews
Projection ?
We think others are thinking and feeling in a similar way to ourselves and assume we are on the same wavelength
“Similar to me”
People tend show preference for those most similar to ourselves
Self fulfilling prophecy
Based on that because we make a prophecy it is more likely to happen
Perceptual defence
Where a person discounts any information that might ruin their perception of someone
